Fellowship interview Tips
While the traditional college admissions process relies heavily on defining students by their hard numbers–GPA, class rank, ACT or SAT score, etc., here at Propel, we believe in getting to know our applicants individually. We’re interested in learning about you holistically–your interests, your experiences to date, and most importantly, understanding why you’re interested in becoming a Propel fellow. Below, we’ve listed some tips to help you prepare for your interview with one of our team members.
-
Arrive early & camera on
Treat this like a real job interview (not in your bed!). We conduct many of our interviews virtually through Zoom. Make sure you test your technology set up, and you’re ready/ present on Zoom or in-person at least 5-10 minutes before the start of your interview. Be prepared to have your camera on and make sure you’re in an area where we can hear you, and you can hear us. Don’t worry about background distractions–we get it–we all have different family dynamics. If you have trouble getting on Zoom, email/ call/ text your admissions representative immediately.
-
Be prepared to talk about yourself
This is our opportunity to learn about YOU! In addition to explaining your application, we want to hear about your personal journey. Be yourself and come prepared to share what makes you unique. What are some of your strengths? What do you consider to be your areas of opportunity? When are you at your best? Here, we can get to know you better as a student and as an individual. This is your chance to shine!
-
Clearly express your interest
We want to understand why you want to be a Propel fellow. This is your chance to share why you’re passionate about a career in the healthcare field. What are your professional goals and how can Propel help you achieve them? We want to know that you’re committed to taking the fellowship seriously. Use examples from your own life in your answers to the questions.
-
Ask questions
It's easy to get caught up in interview prep, but remember, you're also trying to determine whether the Propel fellowship is a good fit for you. Just as you prepared to answer questions, you should also prepare and bring specific questions to ask your interviewer. Try to avoid general questions that can be found online. Instead, get creative and come up with questions that are specific to you.
-
CRAFT YOUR ANSWERS IN ADVANCE
Spend some time reviewing common interview questions and crafting your answers. The more comfortable you feel answering a question, the more your confidence and experience will shine through during the interview. Check out the resource below to help you in practice and prepare for your interview.
